Overview:

Young children will stick objects in the ear, nose, and mouth, which may become stuck

By location:

In the ear:
- Remove via gentle ear syringing or using light and suction in the OR, under anesthesia
In the nose:
- Use sedation or general anesthesia
- Do not push it into the pharynx for risk of aspiration
In the throat:
- Impacted objects (bones) require removal under general anesthesia using a laryngoscope
Swallowed:
- Most likely to lodge in the narrowest part of the GI tract is the cricopharyngeal area of the upper esophagus + the gastroesophageal junction
- Under general anesthesia use a rigid esophagoscope for coins and impacted objects
- Remove batteries ASAP for risk of esophageal perforation
