About the Speaker

Dr. Kari Grain

Dr. Kari Grain is a lecturer at the Adult Learning and Global Change masters program in UBC's Faculty of Education. She is also a special research associate with SFU's Community Engaged Research Initiative. She received her PhD in education at UBC. Her research focuses on the intersection of global community, engaged learning, social justice, and higher education. She is interested in exploring the ethics and power relations embedded in relationships between universities and communities. Dr. Grain is the author of the book titled "Critical Hope." She has also published several articles and book chapters centered around the topic of critical hope.

Antonin Lacelle-Webster

Antonin Lacelle-Webster is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at UBC. He is interested in the politics of hope and despair, as well as democratic theory and democratic innovations. He is working on a dissertation that explores the meaning and importance of hope in democratic systems.
